The story begins in 1979 when the Skylab space station crashes in Australia, carrying a highly infectious fungal microorganism. A team of bioterror operatives, including Robert Quinn and Trini Romano, manage to contain the fungus, though it costs the life of their colleague, Dr. Hero Martins. The sample is buried in a high security underground vault in Kansas.
