The film follows Guy (Reynolds), a bank teller who lives a seemingly peaceful life in Free City. However, he soon discovers that he is actually a non-player character (NPC) in a massively multiplayer online game. Guy becomes self-aware and begins to question his existence and his place in the world. He also starts to develop feelings for Molotov Girl (Comer), a player who is trying to uncover the truth about the game.
