The film follows Tashi (Zendaya), a former tennis player who now coaches her husband, Art (Mike Faist). Art is a world-famous grand slam champion, but he has been on a losing streak. To jolt him out of his slump, Tashi makes him play a Challenger event, which is the lowest level of tournament on the pro tour.
At the Challenger event, Art finds himself standing across the net from Patrick (Josh O’Connor), his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend. Patrick is a once-promising tennis player who has since burnt out. The two men rekindle their rivalry on and off the court, and tensions soon run high.
Challengers is described as a “sexy comedy” with an R rating. It is said to be a “provocative and suspenseful” film that explores themes of love, loss, and redemption.
I am looking forward to seeing this film, and I think it has the potential to be a great one. Guadagnino is a talented director, and the cast is excellent. I am particularly excited to see Zendaya in a more dramatic role.
